New Study Reveals Younger Employees as Potential Cyber Security Risks
A recent study has thrown a curveball in our understanding of cyber security risks, highlighting that your technologically adept younger employees might be the most vulnerable link.
The survey spanned over 6,500 employees globally, with a balanced representation across age groups.
It emerged that younger office workers, those aged 40 or under, are more inclined to neglect basic password safety norms. Astonishingly, 34% confessed to using their birth dates as passwords, in stark contrast to just 19% of their over-40 counterparts.
Younger workers also tend to use the same password across multiple devices, with 38% acknowledging this practice.
The approach to phishing scams was equally concerning. A significant 23% of the younger demographic didn’t report the last phishing attempt they encountered, dismissing it as unimportant.
One might assume they grasp the seriousness of threats like ransomware and phishing. However, only 23% and 22% recognised these as critical threats, indicating a somewhat lackadaisical attitude towards cyber security.
Here’s a crucial point: an overwhelming majority revealed their organisations did NOT offer mandatory cyber security training. This trend was consistent across the board, from the US (30%) and the UK (17%) to the Netherlands (32%), Japan (35%), India (31%), Germany (22%), France (43%), Australia (29%), and China (65%).
So, can we truly hold our young workforce responsible when it’s evident that many businesses are falling short in providing essential cyber security education?
It’s imperative that we elevate cyber security from being an afterthought to a priority, investing in regular cyber awareness training for every member of our businesses – not just the IT department or senior management, but each and every employee.
Protecting your business is crucial, but it’s also about fostering a safer digital environment for everyone.
