Rising Phishing Attacks: What to do.

Rising Phishing Attacks: Microsoft Becomes the Most Imitated Brand

In the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats, your email inbox is a prime target. But have you ever thought that an email appearing to be from Microsoft could be a gateway to a cybersecurity nightmare?

Microsoft, a name synonymous with trust in the tech world, has unfortunately become the most imitated brand in phishing attacks. It’s no surprise given the popularity of the platform. These attacks, where cybercriminals send malicious links or files via email to steal data, are alarmingly on the rise.

While Microsoft isn’t responsible for these deceptions, it’s crucial for you and your staff to remain vigilant against anything that appears even remotely suspicious.

In the second quarter of 2023, Microsoft climbed to the top of the list of brands most frequently mimicked by criminals, responsible for 29% of brand phishing attempts. This puts it significantly ahead of Google at 19.5% and Apple at 5.2%. Collectively, these tech giants represent over half of the brand imitator attacks witnessed.

So, what does this mean for your business?

Despite the surge in fraudulent emails targeting millions of Windows and Microsoft 365 users globally, keen observation is key to safeguarding against identity theft and fraud.

Although the most imitated brands may vary from quarter to quarter, cybercriminals’ methods often remain consistent. They cleverly use authentic-looking logos, colours, and fonts, and phishing scams frequently feature domains or URLs that closely mimic the real ones. Yet, a meticulous examination of these elements, along with the email content, will typically reveal mistakes and typos – classic signs of a phishing attempt.

One prevalent scam alleges unusual sign-in activity on your Microsoft account, luring you to a harmful link designed to pilfer everything from login details to payment information.

And while tech companies continue to be favoured subjects for scams, many criminals have shifted their focus to financial services and law firms, encompassing online banking, gift cards, e-commerce transactions and highly sensitive personally identifiable information (PII). Wells Fargo and Amazon completed the top five list for brand phishing in Q2 2023, accounting for 4.2% and 4% of attempts, respectively.

How can you fortify your business against these threats?

The solution is more straightforward than you might expect. The most effective strategy against phishing is to take a moment to pause, observe, and scrutinise. Examine URLs, domains, and the text of messages for any inconsistencies. And of course, make sure you have a solid multi-tier security system in place as well as good backups.
